Support For Those Aging In Place Goes Beyond Medical Care

April 3, 2023

Here at Masters In Home Care we are proud to be a Connecticut home health care agency that provides unmatched medical coverage for those who have chosen aging in place as their option for independent living as they get older. It is important to have good, reliable home health care support if you are aging in place, but there are other supports that are necessary as well.

It doesn’t matter where you have decided to remain as you age, if you are independently living in a home you will need to have the supports of other professionals as well who can make your life more comfortable and easier to maintain. These professionals and services are more prevalent today then they have ever been and they continue to make the desire of people to live independently an easier reality then it has been in the past.

Some of the services you should consider when you are talking with your loved one who is thinking about aging in place include;

1.) Meal planning/prep/delivery services. Services like Hello Fresh can help your loved one who still likes to cook to be able to have their groceries delivered and pre-portioned. If your loved one does not desire to continue cooking and preparing meals there are other delivery services that can be utilized to provide food in the home without requiring any sort of time outside of the home.

2.) Cleaning services. While there isn’t any major technological advancement in this service it is one that fits into the aging in place lifestyle quite well. Having someone who can come to your loved one’s home and take care of the cleaning duties while allowing her/him to live in a clean environment without the stress that comes with doing the actual cleaning can be a tremendous load off of her/his mind each and every week.

3.) Bill paying services. With the advent of remote work there are a number of ways that your loved one can streamline the need to pay her/his bills while aging in place. It is critical to find someone who you trust and can put in this role, but once you find that right person it can be extremely liberating to have someone doing this tedious task for your loved one and as the caregiver it can take this burden off of you.

4.) Gardening or other nice to have services. While gardening may not be at the top of your list for things that need to be done when your loved one has chosen to age in place, it can be important to have someone tend to the yard so it doesn’t become overgrown and lead to anxiety about the state of their home. Other services can include handy man services and monthly or annual maintenance on the mechanicals of the home.

Support comes in all shapes and sizes for a loved one who is aging in place. Home health care is an incredibly important piece of support, but it is far from the only support that your loved one needs. Making sure to understand all the supports that will be required is vital to understanding the full scope that is facing you and your loved one when making this incredibly difficult life decision.
